Singing for Lung Health in Cornwall

A specialist singing programme designed for people with chronic lung disease

A new Singing for Lung Health programme is launching for people living in the Truro area, led by charity Music for Good. Singing has been proven to support health and well-being in many ways and lung health is one which has gathered growing attention in recent years. This specialist programme is led by practitioners who have trained with the British Lung Foundation, to offer a singing programme for people living with breathlessness as a result of COPD or other respiratory conditions.

This 8 week programme will be offered online, over zoom, to make it accessible and inclusive and enable people to join from the comfort of their home. People living with a chronic lung condition residing in Truro and surrounding areas from Newquay to Falmouth to Redruth are welcome to join. The new programme, aptly named ‘Anella’ which is Cornish for ‘to breathe’, is building on the success of a St Austell based Anella group which has been running since 2018, with support of St Austell Healthcare and the Social Prescribing scheme.

Patients involved in ‘Anella’ (Singing for Lung Health) have reported feeling better able to manage their breathlessness which has led to improved feelings of well-being and ability to lead more fulfilling lives. The sessions include some relaxation techniques, breathing and voice exercise and singing a variety of songs, which are carefully selected for people with breathing difficulties. Participants find it both relaxing and uplifting and are able to apply the learning to their lives, helping them to gain more control over their breathlessness.

In June, the charity will be holding some free taster sessions for anyone interested to try before joining the 8 week programme starting in September. Places are limited so do get in touch.

For more information, if you would like to try a free taster, or if you are based in the St Austell, Lostwithiel, Liskeard areas and would like to join this existing group, please contact Emily at Music for Good. Emily@musicforgood.uk.
